Agroforestry Technical Manager

What this position is about:

This position exists to manage JTI Leaf Zambia agroforestry and curing barn upgrade programs ensuring full implementation. The programs are aimed at providing JTI contracted growers with sustainable sources of wood and reducing wood consumption by replacing traditional curing barns with efficient Flue Cured Virginia (FCV) curing barns.

What will you do?

Agroforestry

  • Oversee the implementation of grower woodlots, live barns and tobacco curing barn programs to ensure sustainability targets are achieved as per strategic plans.
  • Define all input quantities and materials for the projects including personnel requirements and ensure timely ordering and delivery of inputs to growers.
  • Ensure that each curing barn is constructed according to the technical specifications and covers all the key criteria of good curing as stipulated in JTI’s Minimum Agriculture Standards (MAS) – including barn structure, chimney and furnace construction to ensure maximum life of curing barns.
  • Oversee the technical specifications of JTI’s Minimum Forestry Standards (MFS) and provide technical expertise for grower woodlots and JTI’s commercial woodlots.
  • Ensure 100% Agronomy Technician training in MFS and oversee grower training covering:
    • Curing barn development and furnace upgrades
    • Ideal tree seedling production and demonstration woodlots to maximize tree survival in the field
    • Live barn training covering all key areas including care/maintenance, pruning and roofing operational live barns
  • Ensure used polypots and other non-biodegradable material related to agroforestry are disposed in a sustainable manner
  • Ensure timely capturing of grower woodlots and curing barns in the system (Agro-mobility & Flowy)
  • Provide agroforestry and curing barn program reports as required.

Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

  • To conduct daily operations with a positive and proactive EHS culture by:
    • Promoting a Health and Safety culture on site by Leading the example.
    • Showing visible commitment/involvement to EHS ownership so that it is felt by employees.
    • Line Manager of areas where unsafe condition or unsafe act is observed must take immediate action to stop the unsafe condition or unsafe act and be responsible.

Who are we looking for?

  • A Degree in Agroforestry/Agriculture
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience, with high level of Agroforestry/Silviculture knowledge.
  • Fluent in oral and written English
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

    • Leadership capabilities
    • Effective communication, decision-making and interpersonal skills.
    • Takes initiative
