Job Description

Zambia Sugar Plc. is a subsidiary of ABF Group and is the leading sugar producer in Zambia.  Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar, and other sugar downstream products.

The company invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons to fill the following positions in the Estate Support Services Department:

ARTISAN CARPENTER X 1 – PERMANENT

This position will be reporting to the Artisan Lead. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

Key Responsibilities

Assessing works and quantifying materials required to them.

Ensuring that works done are of quality and to acceptable standards.

Making arcing sticks for the Mills section.

Making wooden boxes for transporting factory mill spare parts to South Africa.

Communicating to supervisor on new development and updates regarding carpentry works.

Providing suggestions to supervisor and team on best cost-effective measures of doing works.

Checking materials ordered for works whether they are of good quality for works.

Attending to emergencies in the factory especially to do with door and lock damages.

Ensuring that personal tools and equipment are safe for use.

Ensuring a safe working environment.

Always being safety-conscious while on duty.

Identifying shortcomings and weaknesses in assistants and offering advice where appropriate.

Making recommendations for works and materials required to execute them.

Giving hand-overs to colleagues and supervisor when there’s need to go on leave.

Installing modern locking systems especially at New Refinery and factory MCC’s.

Replacing worn-out ceilings in the factory offices, finance, HR etc and sealing of roof leakages.

Doing shuttering works for bricklayers before casting concrete.

Assembling of office tables, chairs, file-shelves etc

Repair of office furniture and recommending them for reuse in order to reduce costs.

Liaise with supervisors, engineers, and other artisans to complete tasks efficiently.

Keep accurate records of work performed and provide progress reports as required.

Minimum Requirements

Full Grade 12 School Certificate

Craft Certificate in Carpentry & Joinery from a recognized vocational training institute/technical college.

Preferably 2 – 3 years’ practical experience as a Carpenter in construction or maintenance.

Membership with Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ)

Suitably qualified applicants must provide certificates verified by Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).

Competences and Personal Attributes

Must be a self-starter able to execute and deliver with minimum supervision

Good communication skills

Good Leadership skills
