Job Purpose
The Assistant Instrumentation Expert supports the Lead Instrument Technician in carrying out installation, calibration, maintenance, and testing of instrumentation systems. The role provides technical assistance, guidance, and mentoring to semi-skilled staff, helping to ensure that work is performed safely and according to project standards. This position contributes to skills development of local workers but does not carry formal supervisory or legal responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Certification:
Matric / Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent
Progression toward or enrollment in an Instrumentation Trade Test Certificate or relevant NQF Level 3–4 qualification preferred
Completed basic safety and site induction training
Experience:
3–5 years’ practical experience in instrumentation work within mining or industrial environments
Familiarity with semi-skilled worker tasks and role requirements
Experience assisting in mentoring, training, or team support activities
Key Responsibilities
Assist the Lead Instrument Technician with daily instrumentation tasks and support for semi-skilled staff
Carry out installation, calibration, and basic testing of instrumentation devices under guidance
Ensure compliance with project safety, quality, and technical standards
Assist with training and mentoring of local semi-skilled workers to develop technical capabilities
Maintain and organize tools, equipment, and materials as directed
Record work progress, highlight issues, and report to the Lead Instrument Technician
Promote safe work practices and participate actively in toolbox talks and safety meetings
Support pre-commissioning activities, such as loop checks, functional tests, and fault reporting
Core Skills & Competencies
Basic technical knowledge of instrumentation systems and related electrical components
Ability to assist and encourage semi-skilled staff without formal supervisory authority
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and instructions
Strong teamwork and communication skills
High awareness of health, safety, and environmental requirements
Willingness to assist in mentoring and skill transfer to local staff
Working Conditions
Remote mining or industrial project environment with exposure to dust, noise, heat, and varying weather conditions
Full PPE compliance and strict adherence to safety protocols required
May involve shift work, overtime, working at heights, or in confined spaces
