Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

At Mary Begg the Microbiologist is responsible for supervising all staff members within the microbiology laboratory, analyzing samples, managing resources, ensuring the resolution of complaints and non-conformances. This role is crucial for maintaining high standards of laboratory operations and ensuring accurate and reliable laboratory results.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Supervise all work performed in the microbiology laboratory to ensure that reliable test results are generated.
  2. Provide advice to those requesting information about the choice of tests, the use of the laboratory services and the interpretation of laboratory data.
  3. Implement the Quality Management System.
  4. Conduct staff orientation, training and competency assessment of the members of staff in microbiology laboratory.
  5. Identifying and controlling nonconformities in the microbiology laboratory.
  6. Oversee the analysis and interpretation of microbiological data. Prepare and present technical reports and summaries to senior management.
  7. To oversee the smooth running of the EQA program by ensuring all tests are enrolled, the schedules for participation are adhered to, corrective actions are taken for any failed runs, and all associated documentation is completed as per procedures
  8. To perform any other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager from time to time.
  9. Ensuring the promotion of awareness of users’ needs and requirements throughout the laboratory organization
  10. Use the Laboratory Information management system to receive and register samples, enter patient data and examination results, and change patient data or examination results as appropriate
  11. Ensure the effective implementation of the laboratory management system.
  12. Establish, implement, and maintain processes for identifying risks to patient safety and opportunities for improved patient care.
  13. Monitor all work performed in the laboratory to ensure clinically relevant information is generated.
  14. Oversee the management of laboratory reagents and consumables.
  15. Manage the laboratory information systems.
  16. Implement and maintain a safe laboratory environment in compliance with good practice and applicable requirements.
  17. Ensure that all personnel have the required education, training, and competence for their activities.
  18. Ensure that the laboratory participates in continual improvement activities encompassing relevant areas and outcomes of patient care.
  19. Provide appropriate laboratory advice and interpretation to meet the needs of patients and users.
  20. Relate and function effectively with accrediting and regulatory agencies, administrative officials, the healthcare community, the patient population, and providers of formal agreements when required.
  21. Safeguard the impartiality of laboratory activities, confidentiality of patient information, and ensure patients’ well-being, safety, and rights are adhered to.
  22. Seek and address feedback from patients, users, and personnel regarding laboratory Services
