JOB PURPOSE

This function is responsible for supporting the development and execution of innovative product designs, prototypes, and engineering solutions. This role focuses on transforming ideas into detailed technical designs and ensuring smooth implementation through iterative prototyping and testing. Working closely with the Senior Specialist – Design Engineering and cross-functional teams, the individual will play a key role in executing innovation projects aligned with the organization’s strategic goals.

Under the supervision of the Design Engineering Senior Specialist , the following are among the Job Key Responsibilities:

• Assist in creating detailed technical designs, schematics, and models using CAD and other design tools.
• Support the development of prototypes to validate design concepts and ensure alignment with product requirements.
• Collaborate with the Senior Specialist in preparing engineering documentation and reports.
• Build and test prototypes, collecting feedback on performance, durability, and usability.
• Perform troubleshooting and modifications based on test results and stakeholder input.
• Document testing procedures and results to support iterative development.
• Stay updated on emerging design trends, tools, and technologies relevant to the innovation strategy.
• Provide insights on materials, technologies, and sustainable design practices to enhance project outcomes.
• Conduct feasibility studies to evaluate design concepts and propose improvements.
• Work closely with engineers, product managers, and other teams to ensure designs meet business and technical requirements.
• Communicate design concepts effectively to stakeholders, using visual aids such as diagrams and 3D models.
• Coordinate with external vendors and partners to source materials and services required for prototyping.
• Assist in identifying areas for design optimization to improve cost-efficiency, scalability, and performance.
• Contribute to streamlining the design process through innovative methods and tools.
• Support knowledge-sharing initiatives to enhance the capabilities of the design team.
• Any other responsibilities or tasks as maybe assigned by management.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Grade 12 Certificate with Credit or above mandatory in Mathematics and English and any other three subjects
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Certification in CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) or other design software is an added advantage.
• Zambia Qualifications Authority (Zaqa) Verification Certificate for Tertiary Qualifications
• Minimum of 6 years of experience in IT with at least 4 years in design engineering, product development, or prototyping roles.
• Hands-on experience in developing and testing prototypes for new products or technologies.
• Proficiency in CAD software and 3D modeling tools.
• Basic knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and rapid prototyping techniques.
• Familiarity with IoT or smart product integration is a plus.
