Job title: Grants Specialist
Location: Lusaka
Reports to: Manager, Community Led Development (CLD) & CSO Support
Under the general supervision of the Manager – Community-Led Development (CLD) and CSO
Support, the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing effective and efficient
grantmaking, including vertical (philanthropic) giving mechanisms.
Main duties
1. Operationalizes and coordinates vertical giving initiatives (financial, materials) at the community
level, facilitates local fundraising events in support of the CLD approach, maintains grants and
vertical giving database
2. Assists with providing information to help the Operations & Philanthropy Unit formulate grant
proposals to raise resources for onward support to identified communities who have adopted
CLD approach
3. Receives and reviews grant and matching requests from qualifying CBOs and CSOs to ensure that
support is provided, and its objectives and roles and responsibilities of participants are well
articulated
4. Monitors grants and philanthropic giving for legal, financial, and programme compliance,
including but not limited to, ensuring that grant and ‘vertical giving’ requirements are correctly
adhered to
5. Develops, applies, monitors, and documents the grant making workflow processes; designs
templates and tools, and provides data to ensure full compliance with internal controls and legal
requirements
6. Collaborates with the Finance Unit to generate reports required for management reporting,
compliance and financial audits
7. Develops training materials and conducts training for CSOs, CBOs and community grant
recipients to build their financial management, financial inclusion and literacy, entrepreneurship,
participatory grant making, community-based loan systems, and accountability capacities
8. Supports the M&E function through data collection and regular reports as regards progress in
community development activities and all aspects of (participatory) grant-making
9. Facilitates philanthropic services and development of an environment conducive to operating
endowments for community foundations
10. Keeps abreast with development in the field of specialization
11. Performs related tasks as the supervisor may deem necessary from time to time
Requirements
Education and Experience:
Minimum bachelor’s degree and five (5) years of relevant experience, of which two (2) years must be
in grant-making or master’s degree in project management, business administration, accountancy or
minimum part II of ACCA and three (3) years of relevant experience.
Skills and competencies:
• Financial management. Must possess knowledge of financial principles related to grantmaking.
• Good ethics, integrity & accountability
• Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate with a wide range of
stakeholders
• A practical understanding of safeguarding principals
• Proficiency in at least one of the four local languages, Nyanja, Bemba, Tonga or Lozi
• Interest in ICT and willingness to work online regularly and for longer hours
• Attention to detail
• Good project management skills
• Good time and workload management
• A team player
• Experience with Microsoft Office products including Excel, PowerPoint, Word and other online
project management tools.
