Overview:
Our client is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Legal to lead their team This position is pivotal to the success of their sustainability efforts, ensuring that all legal aspects of the mining operations adhere to the highest standards of compliance, ethics, and sustainability. The successful candidate will provide strategic legal advice, manage legal risks, and support the company in achieving its sustainability goals.
Key Responsibilities:

Legal Strategy and Compliance:

Develop and implement the legal strategy for the company, aligning with business objectives, sustainability goals, and regulatory requirements.

Ensure compliance with local, national, and international laws and regulations governing mining operations.

Monitor and interpret legislative and regulatory changes affecting the mining industry, particularly those related to sustainability.

Contract Management:

Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents related to the company’s operations.

Ensure that all contracts and agreements include provisions that promote sustainability and ethical practices.

Litigation and Dispute Resolution:

Manage and coordinate all litigation and dispute resolution processes.

Represent the company in legal proceedings and manage relationships with external legal counsel.

Corporate Governance:

Advise the board of directors and senior management on corporate governance issues.

Ensure that the company adheres to best practices in corporate governance, with a particular focus on sustainable and ethical practices.

Risk Management:

Identify and assess legal risks associated with the companys activities, including environmental and social impacts.

Develop strategies to mitigate potential legal risks and protect the company’s interests.

Regulatory Affairs:

Liaise with regulatory bodies and government agencies to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Obtain necessary permits and licences for mining operations, ensuring that sustainability criteria are met.

Sustainability Initiatives:

Support the company’s sustainability initiatives by providing legal guidance on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues.

Ensure that the company’s legal framework supports sustainable mining practices and contributes to the socio-economic development of the region.

Team Leadership:

Lead and mentor the legal team, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance and professional development.

Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment within the legal department.
Qualifications and Experience:

Educational Background:

Bachelors degree in Law (LLB) is required.

A Masters degree in Law (LLM) or a related field will be an advantage.

Professional Experience:

Minimum of 10 years of legal experience, with at least 5 years in a senior legal role within the mining industry or a related sector.

Extensive experience in corporate law, contract law, and regulatory compliance.

Proven track record of managing complex legal matters and leading legal teams.

Experience in dealing with sustainability and ESG issues is highly desirable.
