JOB PURPOSE
The Heavy Duty Mechanic (On-call: Specific Task) will provide expert mechanical services for heavy-duty equipment used in mining operations. This role is on an on-call basis, meaning the mechanic will be engaged for specific tasks, such as urgent repairs or maintenance of heavy machinery, ensuring minimal downtime and operational efficiency. The Heavy Duty Mechanic plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and functionality of equipment such as haul trucks, bulldozers, graders, excavators, and loaders.
Key Responsibilities:
Mechanical Maintenance & Repairs:

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical issues in heavy-duty mining equipment.

Conduct on-site maintenance and repair tasks, including engine overhauls, hydraulic system repairs, brake systems, and transmission systems.

Perform specific, assigned tasks as per the company’s operational needs, ensuring machinery is safe and ready for use.

Replace, repair, or install parts such as bearings, filters, hoses, belts, and more on mining machinery.

Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify issues quickly and accurately, minimizing machinery downtime.
Preventive Maintenance:

Assist in scheduled preventive maintenance tasks for heavy-duty machinery to ensure they operate at peak performance.

Conduct inspections on heavy equipment to identify potential issues before they lead to breakdowns.

Provide recommendations on parts that need replacement or repair to prevent future failures.
Emergency Repairs:

Be available on an on-call basis for emergency repairs and equipment failures.

Respond quickly to urgent breakdowns, minimizing delays in mining operations.

Ensure that repaired equipment complies with safety standards before being returned to service.
Record Keeping & Documentation:

Maintain accurate records of all work completed, including repairs, parts replaced, and the condition of equipment.

Report findings and actions taken to supervisors and management, including recommendations for further maintenance or replacements.

Ensure proper documentation for all tasks and repairs for compliance with company policies and operational standards.
Health, Safety & Compliance:

Adhere to all health and safety regulations while conducting repairs and maintenance, ensuring that proper protocols are followed to protect the mechanic and other workers.

Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow safe working practices, especially in hazardous environments like mining sites.

Ensure that all heavy-duty equipment meets safety and environmental standards after repairs.
Qualifications and experience

Grade 12 school certificate

Diploma or certification in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Repair, or a related field.

Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Heavy Duty Mechanic, preferably in a mining or industrial environment.

Extensive experience with heavy machinery, including diagnostics, repair, and maintenance of engines, hydraulic systems, and transmissions.

Experience working with equipment from manufacturers such as Bell, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo, or similar.
Skill Specifications:

Strong mechanical aptitude and technical knowledge of heavy-duty equipment repair.

Ability to read and understand technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.

Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and mechanical repair equipment.

Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical and technical issues effectively.

Good communication skills for reporting and explaining repair needs or completed work.
