Job Description

Reports to Laboratory Coordinator. The incumbent is responsible for specific diagnostic/laboratory support and work in close collaboration with clinical team on the project. S/he will oversee research laboratory activities including couriering of samples for additional diagnostic tests.

Main Duties:

  • Acquires and maintains a comprehensive understanding of the study protocol and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Receives, logs, and processes biological samples according to established protocols.
  • Ensures proper labelling, storage, and disposal of samples.
  • Performs rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) as per the study protocol, ensuring accurate and timely results and prepares samples for further testing (e.g., PCR) as required.
  • Conducts fieldwork activities, including setting up and monitoring mosquito traps, and enrolling and sampling participants from DIC households/neighborhoods as per study protocol.
  • Implements and maintains quality control measures for all laboratory procedures and reagents.
  • Accurately records laboratory results and ensure timely data entry into relevant databases and support data analysis and reporting as required
  • Ensures proper functioning and regular maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Adheres to strict biosafety protocols to protect staff and the environment.
  • Participates in ongoing training and capacity building activities to enhance laboratory skills.
  • Works closely with the research nurse and other team members to ensure efficient study conduct.
  • Provides regular updates on laboratory activities to the study coordinator.
  • Assists with management of laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Contributes to the development and improvement of laboratory protocols.
  • Assists in the daily routine work of MOH health Facilities as support staff while prioritizing CIDRZ primary project work
  • Other study related tasks as assigned by the study team.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • Diploma in Bio-Medical Sciences or Recognized equivalent
  • 2 years’ experience
  • Experience in routine diagnostic setting or research setting.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of Zambia
  • In possession of a Valid Practicing License
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • The lab technologist will be required to maintain validated Professional Practicing License.
