Job Description

Job title: Mech Laminator

Site: Kansanshi

Department: Smelter Engineering

Section: Mechanical, Acid Plant/FGD/Slurries

Position reports to : Plastician Supervisor

Direct reports: N/A

Purpose

The Mech Laminator is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of laminated mechanical components used in the acid plant, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, and slurry handling systems at the copper smelter. The role requires a strong understanding of industrial laminating techniques, materials, and equipment used in a high-temperature and chemically aggressive environment.

Key Responsibilities

This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.

  • Perform installation of laminated mechanical components and systems in the acid plant, FGD systems, and slurry handling areas.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and inspections to ensure the integrity and performance of laminated components.
  • Repair or replace damaged or worn laminated parts to minimize downtime and ensure operational efficiency.
  • Fabricate and assemble laminated parts and systems as per engineering specifications and blueprints.
  • Ensure accurate alignment and fitment of laminated components during assembly.
  • Prepare materials for laminating processes, including cutting, shaping, and layering
  • Select appropriate laminating materials based on operational requirements and chemical resistance properties.
  • Perform quality checks and tests on laminated components to ensure they meet industry standards and specifications.
  • Document and report any defects or issues identified during quality checks.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations related to working in a smelting environment.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure a safe working environment for self and colleagues.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding the handling and disposal of laminating materials.
  • Provide technical support and expertise to other maintenance and engineering teams regarding laminating processes and issues.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems related to laminated components and systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections.
  • Prepare reports on the condition and performance of laminated systems and recommend improvements or modifications as necessary.
  • Other duties directed by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 School Certificate
  • Thermal welding certificate
  • Fabrication complex certificate

Experience

  • Minimum of 3-5 thermal plastic welding and fabrication years of experience in mechanical laminating, preferably in an industrial setting such as a smelter or chemical plant.
  • Experience working with materials used in high-temperature and corrosive environments is highly desirable.

BEHAVIOURAL TRAITS

  • Works without micro supervision and ask from the supervisor whenever difficulties arises.
  • Proficiency in laminating techniques and use of laminating equipment.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Operational Requirements

  • Able to read, write, calculate, and communicate in English.
  • Physically fit and able to work on heights.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting heavy objects, standing for long periods, and working in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work in high-temperature areas and with exposure to chemicals.
