Job Title: Mine Superintendent (Coal Mine) x 1

Job Purpose:

The Mine Superintendent oversees the daily operations of the coal mining operation, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant mining activities. This role involves managing mine operations, coordinating with various departments, maintaining regulatory compliance, and leading a team of supervisors and workers to achieve production targets while upholding safety and environmental standards.

The job holder will report to the Head of Mine Operations.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Operational Leadership:
    • Oversee the daily coal mining operations to ensure production goals are met.
    • Manage and direct mining supervisors and operational teams to maintain efficiency and productivity.
    • Plan and allocate resources to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
  2. Safety and Compliance:
    • Lead and promote a culture of safety to ensure the well-being of all personnel.
    • Ensure compliance with all local mining laws and regulations.
    • Monitor and implement safety training programs, conduct regular safety inspections, and address risks.
  3. Personnel Management:
    • Hire, train, and develop staff to build a skilled and competent mining team.
    • Foster a positive work environment and resolve operational conflicts.
    • Schedule workforce resources and manage labour effectively.
  4. Production Monitoring and Planning:
    • Develop and implement strategic plans to optimise coal production and operational efficiency.
    • Review production data and adjust strategies to meet daily, weekly, and monthly targets.
  5. Equipment and Resource Management:
    • Ensure proper maintenance and operation of mining equipment to prevent downtime and ensure worker safety.
    • Plan and oversee the allocation of resources to support operational goals.
  6. Environmental and Sustainability Management:
    • Monitor mining operations to ensure adherence to environmental policies and mitigation plans.
    • Implement sustainable mining practices to reduce environmental impact.
  7. Budget and Financial Oversight:
    • Manage operational budgets, monitor expenses, and identify opportunities for cost reduction without sacrificing safety or production.
    • Review financial reports and adjust operations as necessary to remain cost-effective.
  8. Communication and Collaboration:
    • Serve as the key point of contact between senior management, departments, and frontline staff.
    • Foster effective communication to align teams with organisational goals and resolve issues promptly.
Qualifications:
  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, or related technical field. A Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 10 years of experience in coal mining operations, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong leadership and team-building abilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of coal mining techniques, equipment, and safety protocols.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Proficiency in budget management and operational planning.
  • Familiarity with environmental policies and regulatory compliance related to coal mining.
Certifications:
  • Paid up Member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia.
  • Certified Mine Manager credentials or equivalent certifications are highly desirable.
  • Relevant safety certifications and training qualifications.
