PEAS (www.peas.org.uk) is a fast-growing education charity organisation with a mission to ‘expand access to sustainably delivered quality secondary education across Africa’. We run the fastest-growing network of sustainably financed secondary schools in Africa.
At PEAS, we are passionate about delivering quality education at a low cost, so that we are able to educate the poorest rural communities in Zambia and replicate our model across other communities. We work closely with the Zambian Ministry of Education (MoE), helping to achieve their national goals and have partnered with the MoE to build an exemplary network of secondary schools in Zambia.
PEAS Zambia have achieved great things over the last 12 years, and we know we can achieve even more in the next 10 years. Measuring impact
As an organisation and individuals, we all have key performance indicators to keep us focused on our overall objectives. We track these throughout the year and review them annually to make sure they align with what we want to achieve. The Grants and Business Development Coordinator’s impact will be measured against the following:

Grant reports submitted on time, with internal agreed deadlines met (or any unavoidable delays shared with the relationship owner well in advance)
-
High quality of narrative and financial reporting delivered, with senior report reviewers and narrative contributors rating the review process as at least 3.5 out of 5 on “Good use of their time”

Key contributors to grants are aware of their responsibilities, the deliverables of the grant and provide their input to reports by pre-agreed deadlines
-
All Country Office staff of Specialist grade and above can articulate how their workplan corresponds to committed grant deliverables and are regularly informed of what activities and spending is due each quarter

Securing the annual new business income target for in-country funding to PEAS
Roles and Responsibilities
-
Grant reporting
-
Lead on timely writing, reviewing, and quality assuring narrative and financial reports, including developing templates, assigning tasks to the correct individuals and reviewing the quality of input to ensure it is clear, compelling and aligned to donor interests and guidelines.
-
Communicate clear grant reporting roadmaps to ensure colleagues are aware of their reporting responsibilities and championing strong report writing skills within the organisation.

Coordinate and prepare high-quality updates for donor meetings.
-
Grant management
-
Through monthly grant steering committees and additional meetings, ensure all activity and milestone owners are aware of their milestones, understand what is required to fulfil the requirements and have a realistic deadline for delivery.

Work with PEAS’ Global Grants Manager to use and update grant management information systems and tools.
-
Understand, communicate and monitor compliance with donor contract rules and regulations, and ensure compliance across PEAS Uganda’s grant delivery.
-
Lead on strengthening internal programme and operations staff understanding of their responsibilities under donor running contracts and how this aligns with their work plans.
-
Work with the Finance team to review, track and analyse project expenditure. Participate in calls with select donors, representing the PEAS team at donor meetings and supporting with timely responses to donor requests.

Lead on coordination and stewardship over in-country donor visits, including the briefing of schools and colleagues in advance, talking about PEAS’ work with donors and timely logistics during the visit.

Have ownership over grant management information systems and tools, and mentor country staff to understand reporting, budget management and grant commitments.

Grant business development support
-
Work closely with Operations, M&E and the Programmes Teams to design and package impact data to support quality response to funders.
-
Supporting Programmes and Technical Team colleagues in packaging up and describing their planned activities in an engaging manner.

New business development
-
Supporting the Country Director with progressing funding opportunities in country (institutional and corporate donors) and co-ordinating outreach and relationship building.

Work with business development colleagues on the design, writing and reviewing of quality funding proposals and concept papers for submission to funders.
Qualifications and Skills
-
Bachelors Degree or equivalent in relevant field (Finance / Business Development or Social Sciences)
-
Expertise in working with donors such as (e.g. EU, DFID/FCDO, USAID) on funding proposals and grant management
-
Minimum 5 years’ experience in successfully raising and managing grants in an NGO setting
-
High level of numeracy and understanding of financial controls and procedures
-
Project management skills
-
Understanding of international development issues and donor trends
-
Excellent writing skills in English
-
Confidence in building relationships internally with senior colleagues and external agencies and donors

PEAS Zambia seeks to engage an energetic and young Zambian to take up the role of
School Support Officer.
Reporting to the School Support Specialist, as a School Support Officer (SSO) for the Southern and Eastern cluster of schools, you will be based in lusaka and you will play a pivotal role in the success of our school network. You will be delivering direct support and supervision, being accountable for improving their performance by working alongside our fantastic school staff.

Roles and responsibilities
School supervision
-
School impact: Accountable for driving performance across Access, Quality and Sustainability in the cluster, line managing the School Leaders of each school and sharing their goals.

School compliance: Ensure that schools are operating in accordance with PEAS and GRZ policies.
-
Performance management: Work alongside the School Network Senior Manager to deliver annual performance appraisals of school leaders.
School support
-
Build a strong positive cluster culture where all schools identify and are proud to be part of their cluster, promoting healthy relationships, collaboration and support to one another.
-
Deliver high-quality coaching to school leaders and training for teachers.
-
Coordinate all support from other teams within PEAS Country Office, ensuring that support is delivered when it is needed but is never a distraction from the key activity of educating our students.
-
Support school leaders to set, review, and implementing school improvement plans.
-
Support schools with teacher recruitment and deliver high-quality teacher inductions
-
Interpret and use school-level data to provide relevant and practical support to schools including how to use the functionalities of their School Information System effectively.
-
Conduct lesson observations alongside school instructional leadership teams and provide high-quality feedback and action steps that are routinely followed up.
-
Responsible for ensuring key communications are shared between the schools and country offices
-
Serve as the Child Protection Focal Person for their cluster, delivering child protection training in collaboration with School Focal Persons and leading investigations and case management in consultation with PEAS Zambia Safeguarding Officer.
Representing PEAS in our schools and communities
-
Attend all BoG meetings for all assigned cluster schools.

Identifying, inducting and training BoG members
-
Attend and speak at community and BoG community engagement activities.
-
Support school leaders with community engagement and marketing/enrolment activities
-
Will be an independent advisor for case management and principal or support investigator wherever a Child Protection, Adult Safeguarding, Anti-Corruption, or Staff Disciplinary concern arises.
Inspections
-
Uphold PEAS’ standards through the PEAS inspection process, and act as a confidential and independent quality assurer alongside the School Network Support Manager.
Line Management

Build a strong team spirit aligned with PEAS values and culture; offering leadership, motivation and support for employee development

Set clear goals and high expectations of those that you line manage, hold regular 1-2-1s to discuss progress towards goals and carry out annual progress reviews in line with the PEAS annual progress cycle

Wider impact

Reserve 10% time to work on special projects which can benefit the whole school network (e.g Livelihood project; pedagogy review project)

Support School Network Senior Manager to champion PEAS with local governments; engaging with key players such as DEBS/PEOS to build strong relationships, raise awareness and share PEAS approach.

Upon occasion, work with the PEAS Zambia Senior Partnerships Manager and/or UK Technical Team to share PEAS expertise with external organisations and/or deliver a project to support a partner organisation
Who we are looking for
The candidate
Has:

A bachelor’s degree in Education from a recognised university
-
Minimum of two years experience serving as a school leader
-
Experience in working with complex stakeholder groups in low-income settings
-
Experience in managing budgets
-
Background knowledge of safeguarding practices
-
Proven track record of improving educational outcomes in low-resource settings.

Proven track record of successfully delivering training to school leaders and teachers

The Role:
The PEAS School Coordinator plays a pivotal oversight role to ensure that MoE – PEAS schools are high quality, inclusive and sustainably run. The School Coordinator will oversee the operational efficiencies of all infrastructure, support the Headteacher to ensure an effectively managed school campus and be the principal contact for non-educational – administrative aspects of the school, to ensure the schools’ high performance in all areas. This role demands a dynamic individual who can build strong relationships and work closely with the Head Teacher, teaching staff, and PEAS to ensure the school’s success in line with the Government of the Republic of Zambia’s and PEAS’ standards and policies.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Staff Management:
-
On behalf of the school board, the School Coordinator will be responsible for enhancing the performance of staff, placement and surrendering of staff, including school management, by working closely with PEAS and DEBS.
-
Provide technical support to the Instructional Leadership Team as needed, including supporting the PEAS-employed head of studies to ensure strong implementation of PEAS’ approach to teacher professional development (certified by the Teaching Council of Zambia). This may include engaging in lesson observations and professional development sessions to support teacher performance and training.
-
Ensure that all staff align with the school’s mission and vision, as well as with PEAS Values by modelling PEAS values and principles in all interactions.
2. School Improvement and Policy Oversight:
-
On behalf of the school board, the School Coordinator will approve and monitor the School Improvement Plan (SIP), as well as approve school policies, and proposals for new projects made by the Head Teacher. This will also include approving the school admission policy to ensure it is alignment to PEAS commitment to deliver inclusive secondary education.
-
Work closely with the Head Teacher and provide technical support to drive the overall performance of the school, encompassing quality of education, operations (including construction), joint community engagement and effective implementation of projects and PEAS’ interventions.
-
Work in close collaboration with the PEAS central office team and PEAS School Support Officer (SSO) to drive school quality improvements.
3. Child Protection:
-
Overall responsibility for ensuring strong child protection systems is in place within the school and in line with GRZ and PEAS Child Protection Policies and Frameworks (covering Awareness, Prevention, Reporting and Response).
-
Ensure Head Teacher compliance with GRZ and PEAS Child Protection Policies, strong case management, and provide technical support to the Child Protection Focal Person (CPFP).
4. Compliance and Collaboration:
-
Ensure the Head Teacher and school’s adherence to GRZ expectations and requirements for the Grant Aided scheme, as well as PEAS’ standards and regulations.
-
Maintain effective communication and consultation with the Head Teacher to effectively tackle and overcome challenges in school operations
-
Liaise with PEAS central office to approve funds requested by GRZ HT to improve school performance, inclusion and sustainability
-
On behalf of the board, oversee the management of PEAS funded projects through engagement with the Head Teacher and School Accountant and ensure compliance with PEAS guidelines
Qualifications:

A minimum of Bachelor of Education, with any business-related qualification in leadership and management.
