Job description:
PURPOSE
The Community Livelihood Officer plays a critical role in enhancing the livelihoods of local communities affected by mining operations. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing programmes that promote economic development, social well-being, and sustainable practices in the local area. The officer will work closely with community members, stakeholders, and external partners to identify needs and create initiatives that foster positive relationships between the Kansanshi Mine and the communities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function. Key responsibilities include:
Community Engagement:
• Build and maintain effective relationships with community members, local leaders, and organisations.
• Conduct regular community consultations to assess needs, opportunities, and concerns related to livelihood.
Programme Development and Management:
• Design, implement, and monitor livelihood enhancement programmes tailored to the unique needs of communities around the mine.
• Collaborate with local stakeholders to establish sustainable agricultural projects, vocational training programmes, and entrepreneurship initiatives.
Capacity Building:
• Facilitate training and development workshops for community members to enhance skills and promote self-sufficiency.
• Support local enterprises through mentoring, training, and access to resources.
Partnerships and Collaboration:
• Liaise with government agencies, NGOs, and other organisations to leverage resources and expertise for community development.
• Represent the company in community meetings and other public forums.
Monitoring and Evaluation:
• Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess the impact of livelihood programmes.
• Prepare reports and presentations on programme outcomes and community benefits for internal and external stakeholders.
Compliance and Reporting:
• Ensure that all community programmes align with company policies, environmental regulations, and social responsibility standards.
• Track expenditures and maintain accurate records of programme implementation and outcomes.
Crisis Management:
• Address community concerns and grievances proactively and professionally.
• Collaborate with the Social Performance Superintendent to develop strategies for mitigating potential conflicts.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Community Development, Environmental Studies, or a related field. Master’s degree is an added advantage.
Experience
• Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in community development, corporate social responsibility, or a similar role, preferably in the mining or extractive industry.
• Knowledge of sustainable development principles and practices.
• Familiarity with local language(s) and culture of North Western province to facilitate better community engagement is an asset.
SKILLS
• Strong understanding of the socio-economic challenges faced by mining-affected communities.
• Proven experience in project management, stakeholder engagement, and report writing.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• Ability to travel regularly to community sites and mining operations.
• Prolonged outdoor work under varying weather conditions may be required.
• Flexibility in working hours, including evenings and weekends, as community needs may dictate.
