Zambia Sugar Plc. is a subsidiary of Illovo Sugar Africa Group and is the leading sugar producer in Zambia. Its main activities are the growing of sugar cane, the production and marketing of sugar and other sugar downstream products.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons for the position of Safety Director in the SHERQ Department. This Executive position is based at Nakambala and reports to the Managing Director. The successful incumbent will be responsible for setting direction and strategy for Occupational Safety, Health and Risk (HR&S) performance for the Business Unit through provision and assurance of policies, procedures, systems, applicable legislative / regulatory requirements and minimum standards.

POSITION: SAFETY DIRECTOR

Key Responsibilities

  • Actively lead the culture shift with Executives, Team Leads and individuals in shifting the overall Occupational Safety, Health and Risk and business performance.
  • Define, amend, and implement the Business Unit Occupational Safety, Health and Risk policies.
  • Work collaboratively with Group to access world class Safety & Health benchmarks and best practices and ensure that business activities and individuals adhere to the organization’s Occupational Safety, Health and Risk policies, procedures, minimum standards and mandatory instructions.
  • Oversee and hold the Business Unit accountable to the highest standards of safety, occupational health and risk mitigation performance.
  • Actively engage functional heads to align business goals that support safety as the number one strategic priority.
  • Analyze external and internal developments, monitor Business Unit performance, and resolve issues regarding Occupational Safety, Health and Risk.
  • Actively partner with Centres of Excellence (CoE’s), functional leads and external experts to proactively address opportunities to design out and reduce risk exposure, ensuring that the hierarchy of control is being applied accordingly.
  • Lead the identification and reduction of business risk.
  • Create clarity of risk tolerance and ensure plans, goals and governance processes are aligned.
  • Lead and direct Health and Safety Operational Control and fatal risk management processes, interventions and programs associated with determining and addressing business risk.
  • Ensure prompt, appropriate, and effective response to all safety incidents, working closely with the executive and relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide expert advice on managing and applying systems of work, reduction of risk exposure and overall improvement towards expected culture maturity.
  • Identify and build Occupational Safety, Health and Risk capability, competency and capacity within the function and within operations.
  • Ensure the correct coverage to influence, coach, support and supervise compliance and continual improvement.
  • Ensure that risks associated with the business are identified, analysed, evaluated, and modified through formal risk treatment methodologies to satisfy the business risk criteria while ensuring continuous communication and consultation with relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure the implementation of the IIRMS framework to integrate the process for managing risk into the business’s overall governance, strategy and planning, management, monitoring, continuous improvement, reporting processes, policies, values, and culture.
  • Establish and manage the Emergency Response Management system in accordance with the Company and Insurer’s requirements.
  • Ensure Group procedures and operational plans for handling incidents are monitored, evaluated, and implemented effectively.
  • Ensure relevant legislative and regulatory standards, systems, processes and SHERQ certification requirements are met.

Qualifications and Experience

  • BSc/BA Degree in Engineering, Business Management/Safety/Risk Management
  • 10+ years’ experience preferably in engineering/safety in a factory environment or a similar high-risk operation.
  • Demonstrable track record of skills/experience gained within a similar position(s), at a similar level.
  • Sound business and financial acumen.
  • Proactive, results-focus, with proven high ethical standards.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills. Proven track record in managing and developing teams.
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant legislative, regulatory standards and certifications.
  • Knowledge of relevant software / management systems.
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory standards.
