Purpose of the Role
The Superintendent – Geotechnical will oversee all geotechnical aspects related to Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) and tailing dams. This includes ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, implementing best practices for geotechnical design and risk management, and providing technical leadership to maintain the integrity and safety of TSFs and associated structures.
Key Responsibilities

Geotechnical Risk Management
-
Develop and maintain a geotechnical risk register for TSFs and tailing dams.

Monitor and analyze geotechnical performance to ensure structural stability and integrity.

Conduct regular geotechnical audits, risk assessments, and inspections.

Compliance and Safety
-
Ensure adherence to Zambian mining regulations and international standards for TSFs and tailing dams.
-
Develop and implement safety protocols related to geotechnical operations.
-
Provide oversight for compliance with environmental, health, and safety standards.

Design and Construction Oversight
-
Collaborate with consultants and design engineers to ensure TSF and dam designs meet operational and life-of-mine requirements.

Oversee the construction of TSFs and dams, ensuring work aligns with approved geotechnical designs.

Verify that embankment designs, freeboard, and drainage systems meet prescribed specifications.

Operational Management
-
Develop and maintain operating procedures for tailings deposition and water management.

Manage geotechnical monitoring systems to collect and analyze data related to pore pressure, slope stability, and settlement.

Ensure timely response to geotechnical anomalies and recommend corrective actions.

Reporting and Documentation
-
Prepare and submit geotechnical reports, including daily, weekly, and monthly monitoring updates.

Maintain accurate and comprehensive documentation of inspections, risk assessments, and remedial actions.

Leadership and Training
-
Provide technical leadership and mentoring to the geotechnical team.

Train personnel on geotechnical safety and monitoring procedures.

Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including TSF operations, maintenance, and environmental departments.

Budget and Resource Management
-
Develop and manage operational and capital budgets related to geotechnical activities.

Ensure efficient allocation and use of resources for geotechnical monitoring and maintenance.

Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.

A Master’s degree in Geotechnical or Structural Engineering will be advantageous.

Eligibility for membership with the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) and Engineering Registration Board (ERB).

All qualifications must be certified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
Experience
-
Minimum of 10 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, with at least 5 years in a supervisory role.

Proven expertise in the management of TSFs and tailing dams.

Experience with geotechnical instrumentation, data analysis, and risk management.

Knowledge of embankment construction, slope stability, and tailings deposition systems.
Key Competencies
-
Proficiency in geotechnical software (e.g., GeoStudio, Slide, or PLAXIS).

Familiarity with international standards for tailings management (e.g., ICMM and GISTM guidelines).

Strong understanding of soil mechanics, hydrology, and structural behavior.
-
Ability to develop and execute geotechnical monitoring programs.
