WILDLIFE COORDINATOR: SIMALAHA COMMUNITY CONSERVANCY
Position Title: Wildlife Coordinator
Reporting to: Conservancy Manager
Duration: Fixed Term Contract
Location: Mwandi, Zambia
Position Overview:
The role of the Wildlife Coordinator within the Conservancy Management Unit of Simalaha Community
Conservancy (SCC) is multifaceted, involving aspects of leadership; counter poaching, human wildlife
conflict response and community engagement. His/her core responsibility and objectives will be to
essentially conserve, preserve and protect the natural resources and wildlife assets in alignment with
and support to the SCC in achieving the successful implementation of SCC Strategic Business Plan.
Role Responsibilities:
Strengthening Law Enforcement operations
• Development and implementation of an updated law enforcement and anti-poaching strategy
and concept of operations.
• Plan and oversee the community scouts weekly and monthly work programme; and assist with
their state of preparedness and deployment.
• Oversee the effective implementation of an operations control room to coordinate, control and
monitor all SCC anti-poaching operations including the movement of personnel and assets.
• Oversee the development and implementation of a horse mounted section of community scouts.
• Develop a movement and access control strategy for the SCC area to counter any security risks
• Support the establishment and management of an authorised information gathering structure
which includes an analytical capacity that leads to action, both pro-active and re-active.
• Ensure the investigations and prosecutions process is effectively performed to ensure an
acceptable prosecution rate.
• Devise and implement programmes to sensitize both communities and authorities and to ensure
that the legal systems support conservation practises.
• Implementation of field scouts deployment and patrolling strategies including the
implementation of SMART / Earth Ranger system to record anti-poaching and wildlife related
information.
Human wildlife conflict management
• Help establish, equip and train a dedicated human wildlife conflict response team.
• Provide mentorship and monitoring and ensure regular detailed reporting of all human wildlife
conflict events.
• Provide recommendations on strategies and actions to mitigate and manage human wildlife
conflict.
• Lead a multi-faceted approach to responding to human wildlife conflict reports and instituting
mitigation measures as a proactive approach to support co-existence with communities.
Infrastructures and equipment
To lead the wildlife department in the implementation of the SMART / Earth ranger park project and
supervise the wildlife department staff engaged in this project.
• Develop and implement a plan for monitoring and maintenance of the gates and the fences,
ensuring that at all times both fences and gates are in good working condition.
• Monitor the effective and safe utilisation of wildlife section assets, including the safe and secure
management, storage and handling of firearms and ammunition and other high value resources.
• To be directly responsible for the proper use and maintenance of the vehicle and equipment from
the wildlife department; to report to the operations manager on all vehicle servicing
requirements, to maintain a monthly log sheet on all vehicles from the wildlife department.
• To obtain prior approval from conservancy manager and operations manager for any extensive
road trips using SCC vehicles, outside of the project area.
Manage the Community Scouts
• Ensure satisfactory motivation, discipline and standards are maintained while retaining the
respect and following of personnel.
• Ensure with the HR department that international best practices regarding human rights are
embedded within SCC wildlife department.
• Implementation of the performance monitoring system to monitor both unit and individual
performance against pre-defined standards building the skills and competence of all community
scouts,
• To carry out annual Performance appraisals of the community rangers.
• Overseeing the implementation of an incentive rewards system for operational personnel.
• Conduct assessments and advise SCC management on training needs of community scouts.
• Assist in training of community scouts.
• Identification and resolution of conflict challenges.
• Ensure the rules of the SCC for both employees and visitors are adhered too.
Reporting
• To report to the operations manager on all matters pertaining to the wildlife management
component.
• To provide detailed weekly and monthly reports on the community scouts patrols and detailed
information on the wildlife movements, numbers, distribution, etc.
• Work in close collaboration with the community development manager and the conservation
agriculture coordinator.
• To provide monthly reports to the operation manager on the status of the equipment and assets
of the wildlife department (including the armoury, firearms & ammunition stocks)
• To provide monthly reports of the infrastructure maintenance undertaken by the wildlife
department.
• To provide detailed minutes of meetings and distribute copies of minutes to key stakeholders.
Budget Administration
• Under close direction of the accountant, manage the project bank account on a “cost
reimbursement” method from Peace Parks Foundation; Monthly returns to be prepared on Excel
and presented to the accountant through the operations manager by the 3rd of each month.
• Monthly financial reports and replenishment requests to be submitted to Peace Parks Foundation
via the operations manager and the accountant.
• Follow the expenditure rules as per SCC financial procedures document.
• To undertake that no out-of-pocket expenses will be paid to stakeholders without prior approval
of SCC senior management (conservancy manager, operations manager) as provided for in the
budget.
• To undertake that monthly expenditure will remain strictly within allocated budget.
• Develop an annual workplan and budget for the wildlife department.
• Ensure that implementation of activities takes place according to the approved workplan and
budget.
Qualifications
• Degree in Wildlife Management or Advanced Certificate in conservation field.
• At least 12 years of work experience in implementing wildlife management activities.
• Experience working with office systems.
• A demonstrated commitment to enhancing team culture and working environment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Remuneration: A competitive salary package will be negotiated, based on qualifications and
